The Arndt Small Animal Center has been a “Cat Friendly Clinic” for two years now! The veterinary practice recently celebrated its anniversary as an accredited Cat Friendly Clinic (CFC) - a reason to celebrate! The program is operated by the International Society of Feline Medicine (veterinary department of the well-known animal welfare organization International Cat Care) and the accreditation is made possible in partnership with Ceva, Royal Canin, Boehringer Ingelheim, Idexx, Elanco and Zoetis.

The program is intended to ensure that cats in veterinary practices and clinics feel comfortable and receive high-quality care. In order to be certified, veterinary clinics must meet strict requirements, such as providing outpatient and inpatient facilities that offer cats an environment that is as stress-free as possible, as well as proof of appropriate measures and an appropriate attitude on the part of the employees. Criteria to be met include separate waiting areas for dogs and cats, special cage boxes during inpatient stays and veterinary equipment specially developed for the treatment of cats.

Most important requirement: Employees must treat the cats carefully and respectfully. The clinics are expected to provide consistently high standards of veterinary care. This includes regular training on the latest findings in cat medicine. As a “Cat Advocate” at the clinic, Ms. Arndt personally pays attention to the well-being of the cats and is proud of the existing accreditation: “The accreditation as a Cat Friendly Clinic is proof of our high standards in cat care, but also of our sensitivity and our Expertise in dealing with cats. Our cat facilities are designed to reduce stress and all our staff have been trained in gentle handling techniques. We can also explain to owners how to ease anxiety when medication or treatment needs to be administered at home. With the help of our accreditation, we want to show cat owners that regular preventative care and an immediate visit to the vet if their cat is unwell can help ensure that their pet is rewarded with a longer, healthier and happier life.”

The International Society of Feline Medicine launched the Cat Friendly Clinic initiative to encourage veterinary clinics to make every effort to optimize the well-being of the cats in their care. The program provides practices with recommendations on how to make their environments as welcoming to cats as possible and provides support for staff training, cat handling techniques and care for their owners.
