To the west of the city center, near the Rhine and the Rhine port, lies Mühlburg. When the Rhine port opened in 1901, it brought Mühlburg a significant economic boom. At the same time, the city's power station was built near the harbor. In the areas of Alt Mühlburg, Weingartensiedlung, Rheinhafen and Mühlburger Feld, several extensive residential areas and commercial settlements were created after extensive destruction in the Second World War. The area between Rheinstraße and Entenfang-Lameyplatz is known as Karlsruhe's second shopping center due to its large number of shops. The 15,000 residents appreciate the many green spaces, the good transport connections close to the city and the numerous shopping opportunities.
