To the west of the city centre, near the Rhine and the Rhine harbour, lies Mühlburg. When the Rhine harbour opened in 1901, this brought Mühlburg a significant economic upswing. At the same time, a power station was built near the port. In the areas of Alt Mühlburg, Weingärtensiedlung, Rheinhafen and Mühlburger Feld, several extensive residential areas and commercial settlements were created after extensive destruction in the Second World War. Between Rheinstraße and Entenfang-Lameyplatz, the area is known as Karlsruhe's second shopping centre due to its large number of shops. The many green spaces, the good transport connections close to the city and the numerous shopping facilities are appreciated by the 15000 inhabitants.
