Mühlburg lies west of the city center, near the Rhine River and the Rhine port. The opening of the Rhine port in 1901 brought Mühlburg a significant economic boom. At the same time, the city's power plant was built near the port. Following extensive destruction during World War II, several large residential and commercial areas were developed in the districts of Alt Mühlburg, Weingärtensiedlung, Rheinhafen, and Mühlburger Feld. The area between Rheinstraße and Entenfang-Lameyplatz is known as Karlsruhe's second shopping district due to its numerous shops. The 15,000 residents appreciate the many green spaces, the excellent transport connections near the city center, and the numerous shopping opportunities.
