With the merger of various residential areas of Weststadt and Mühlburg in the 1970s, Nordweststadt was formed. Most of the housing projects were built after the Second World War, and to this day, the district lacks either a distinctive landmark or a historic core. Life in Nordweststadt is pleasant. Schools and kindergartens are plentiful, and the Karlsruhe tram system provides quick access to destinations. The shopping situation, however, is less satisfactory, although two large supermarkets offer a better service. The commercial areas are located on Neureuter Straße, away from the residential areas. A little further north, towards Hart, lies the site of the "old airfield," a protected area (Flora-Fauna-Habitat).
