dual study program @datarec

What is a dual study program?

In short: A dual study program gives you the opportunity to attend university while simultaneously gaining practical experience in a company or organization. This is particularly useful and practical if you can't decide after graduating from school whether you'd prefer an apprenticeship or university studies. With a dual study program, you can do both: study and work at the same time! There are various dual study models, and in some, you can even earn not only a university degree but also a vocational qualification. This special study model combines the best aspects of vocational training and university studies: On the one hand, you'll gain comprehensive theoretical knowledge at the university. On the other hand, you'll receive a training allowance and get to know the professional world in a company – with your so-called practical partner. As you can see, this program will make you a true talent on all levels!

What is the difference between a dual vocational training program and a dual study program?

The aim of a dual degree is to closely link theory and practice – similar to a dual vocational training program – thus giving students the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience in the professional world while studying at a university. This allows them to directly apply and implement what they have learned in the workplace. The difference from a traditional dual vocational training program is that students attend a university or academy for their theoretical instruction, rather than a vocational school or technical college. There, they pursue a university degree. This means that they will receive a bachelor's degree, but not necessarily a qualification in a recognized vocational trade. However, there are also models where both are possible, allowing students to obtain both a bachelor's degree and a completed vocational qualification upon completion of their dual studies.

What dual study programs do we offer?

The practice-integrated study program

In addition to your academic studies – in block or weekly formats – you gain practical experience in a company without completing an additional apprenticeship. Typically, you choose a company where you will gain practical experience during your dual studies. Internships lasting several months at various companies are also possible. The advantage of this dual study model is that you are not exclusively tied to a single partner company. You can complete subsequent internships at different companies, allowing you to gain experience in various fields and build a network of contacts during your dual studies. Another advantage of this practice-integrated dual study program is that, in addition to lectures and seminars at the university, you do not attend a separate vocational school, thus having more free time compared to the apprenticeship-integrated study model.
The practice-integrated dual study program is particularly suitable for:
Young people at the end of their schooling who do not yet have much professional experience and place great value on a wide selection of practical partners.

The work-integrated dual study program

This model is suitable for you if you are already employed but have now decided to pursue further education through a dual study program. In consultation with your company, you can reduce your working hours on your days off to attend your studies. Therefore, employer support is a prerequisite for this dual study model. The work-integrated dual study program is ideal if you want to further your education but find a full-time job and university studies too demanding. Since you reduce your working hours for this study model, you will naturally receive a lower salary during this time.
The work-integrated dual study program is particularly suitable for:
Employed individuals who want to further their education through a dual study program – and therefore want to reduce their working hours at the company.

The work-integrated dual study program

The work-integrated dual study program (also called a combined study program) functions similarly to the work-integrated dual study program – with the difference that you do not reduce your working hours. This means that you have a normal work week in your job and simultaneously complete an evening or distance learning course. The associated heavy workload must be taken into account. During the work-integrated dual study program, you will have very little free time.

The advantage here is:
You don't have to change your professional status and will continue to receive your full salary. Your employer also actively participates in this dual study model. For example, they are required to release you from work for exams.
The work-integrated dual study program is particularly suitable for:
Professionals who want to further their education with a dual study program – and continue working full-time in their job during that time.

What do I need for a dual study program? Do I need a high school diploma to complete a dual study program?

High school diploma @marygober

To be admitted to a dual degree program, you need a university entrance qualification, i.e., the Abitur (German university entrance diploma). Please note, however, that with a Fachabitur (German subject-specific university entrance qualification), you can only pursue dual studies at universities of applied sciences and vocational academies, not at traditional universities, which is also quite rare. Dual study programs are generally offered at universities of applied sciences.

Can I complete a dual study program even without a high school diploma?

You don't have a high school diploma or vocational diploma? You still have a chance of getting a place in a dual study program – if you have completed vocational training and at least three years of professional experience, or have completed further training as a master craftsman, technician or business administrator.
