Karlsruhe Durlach Durlach is the largest district of Karlsruhe. The founding of the new residential city of Karlsruhe originated here in 1715. The eastern Karlsruhe district of Durlach is older than Karlsruhe itself. Medieval flair characterizes Durlach's old town with its picturesque market square, city wall, palace square, and narrow streets and historic buildings. With almost 30,000 inhabitants, Durlach is the largest district of Karlsruhe and is often referred to as the "mother" of Karlsruhe. This is because Durlach was the residence of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach. However, in 1715, Karl Wilhelm moved his court to Karlsruhe. Durlach remained an independent town. It was not incorporated into Karlsruhe until 1938.
