The city center is the heart of Karlsruhe and is bustling with life. Whether you're studying, working, spending your free time, living, or shopping in one of the many stores – there's something for everyone! Administratively, the city center is divided into an eastern and a western section, with Karl-Friedrich-Straße serving as the boundary.
— City Center East —
The Innenstadt-Ost (Inner City East), Karlsruhe's smallest district, stretches from the market square to the Durlacher Tor (Durlach Gate), from the Adenauerring to the Ettlinger Tor (Ettlingen Gate) and Kapellenstraße. Part of this district—the "Altstadt" (Old Town), and thus the oldest part—corresponds to Klein-Karlsruhe (Little Karlsruhe), a former settlement of construction workers from the palace grounds, which was incorporated into the city in 1812. A few of the buildings constructed during Karlsruhe's founding years still remain today. Following the Old Town's redevelopment in the 1970s, the original building fabric of this "village" almost completely disappeared.
The eastern Kaiserstraße serves as an extension of the main shopping and service center in the western half of Karlsruhe and the western part of the city center. The eastern part of the city center boasts Karlsruhe Palace as a visual highlight and recreational area, along with the adjacent palace gardens and the Hardtwald forest to the north, as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
— City Center West —
The western part of the city center, between the market square and the Mühlburg Gate, forms a quintessential business and service center. 9,000 people live in this district, and 25,000 are employed in its various businesses. Kaiserstraße serves as the traditional shopping street, complemented by the "Postgalerie" at Europaplatz and the Ettlinger Tor Center at Ettlinger Tor. Karlsruhe had long sought to expand its inner-city shopping and service offerings. This became a reality in 2005 with the construction of the Ettlinger Tor Center. The Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice are also located in this part of the city center. Other public institutions in this district include the Evangelical Church Council, the Baden State Museum, the Baden State Library, and the Karlsruhe City Hall, located on the market square.
